Description: This presentation will review the four major management practices - Management by Objective (MBO), Participative Management (PM), Total Quality Management (TQM), and Knowledge Management (KM) and discuss their best practices in achieving library excellence. This topic should be of great interest to CALA members and other interested audience, because this is a rare opportunity to hear one of the best and most experienced library managers sharing his knowledge and experience with us. This presentation will be about one-hour long, followed by a 20-30 minute discussion.

Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee, former Chief of Asian Division, the Library of Congress, and Dean Emeritus of Ohio University Libraries, has more than 40 years of experience in academic libraries including the University of Pittsburgh, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Asian Institute of Technology (in Bangkok, Thailand), Colorado State University, Ohio University, Ohio University, OCLC, and the Library of Congress. He is a highly regarded academic in the library communities and a sought-after lecturer and consultant in the US and Asia. He authored or coauthored five books and 80 professional papers. Upon his retirement in 1999 after serving for more than 21 years as the Dean of Libraries, Ohio University named a new library building as Hwa-Wei Lee Library Annex and the first floor of the main library as Hwa-Wei Lee Center for International Collections. Among the many honors he received are the Distinguished Service Awards of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association and the Chinese American Librarians Association, Ohio Librarian of the Year, John Ames Humphrey Award of the American Library Association for Significant Contributions to International Librarianship, Ohio Librarian Hall of Fame, and OCLC award for significant contributions as OCLC Visiting Distinguished Scholar.

Immediately following this lecture will be a brief CALA-GMAC membership meeting, new officers election and a dinner at 5:00 pm at Hunan Dynasty Restaurant (215 Pennsylvania Ave., SE, Washington DC. Tel: 202-546-6161). Dinner is $20 per person.
