“Koryo Saram” is the term Koreans who live outside of the homeland call themselves. At the turn of the century, large migrations of Koreans fled to the eastern shores of Russia to escape famine in their own country; they sought better living conditions in the border towns of Eastern Russia. Russian Korean communities flourished until the Stalin era when immigrant groups (termed “unreliable people”), particularly Soviet Koreans, were exiled to the barren western steppes of Central Asia. The struggle and survival of the Koryo Sarams is the subject of the documentary.

Svetlana Kim, a Soviet-Korean émigré and Board member of ADFS with Director Suh Ah-Jeung Suh of the Korea Foundation will introduce the film event. Film co-director and producer, Y. David Chung will talk about the making of the documentary. Korean Film Scholar, Sueyoung Park-Primiano, also a Florence Tan Moeson Fellow will provide a brief background on Korean Films.

From October 1st through the 17th a Soviet-Korean Book Exhibit will be on display from 9-5pm at the Asian Reading Room, LJ150, Jefferson Building, located at 10 First Street SE.
