A brief review of the history of the Chinese response to African American literature beginning at the turn of the 20th century. The Chinese interest in African American literature was linked with their efforts to overthrow the oppressive rule of Qing Dynasty and their determination to resist the threatened domination by the foreign powers. African Americans' experiences of enslavement and freedom served as a valuable lesson to the Chinese and was a rich source of inspiration.
