This lecture will show [1] A film of the welcome to the Jews of Cochin and an American delegation from B’nai B’rith by the Cochin Royal family; and [2] slide show "Simchat Torah 1965 in the Paradesi Synagogue" by Helen Sirkin.
The program is accompanied by an Exhibition on “Jews of South India,” curated by Dr. Robbins

Description:
The ancient Jewish community of South India thrived for many centuries before the rise of the famous Jewish community of Cochin. Jews generally were extremely well treated by their neighbors and often favored by rulers like the Maharajas of Cochin. Over the centuries, foreign Jews continued to come, thereby adding to the complexities of intracommunal relationships.
About the speaker:
Dr. Kenneth X. Robbins is editing a book on Jews of India and Jews in India. He has published extensively on Indian history, art, religion, numismatics, philately, and medicine as well as curating ten Indian exhibitions.
